A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to deliver behavior-analytic services directly to clients — under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). RBTs are the hands-on practitioners of ABA: running teaching programs, collecting data, and supporting meaningful skill-building, often with children and individuals with autism.
It is one of the most accessible credentials in behavioral health. You do not need a college degree to start — and for many people the RBT becomes the first step toward becoming a BCBA later on.

A high-school diploma or GED equivalent. No college degree, no prior ABA experience, no prerequisite coursework.
A 40-hour training course that meets the BACB's RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline, which applies to everyone applying on or after January 1, 2026. The exam itself follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). Most courses are online and self-paced.
The BACB requires a criminal background check as part of the application. Your future employer may also run their own.
A qualified BCBA observes you working and verifies your skills across the RBT competency areas using the BACB's official assessment. It's a practical demonstration, not a written test — most people complete it through an employer or training program.
A computer-based exam delivered at Pearson VUE testing centers, covering the RBT Test Content Outline. Once you pass and the BACB issues your certification, you're an RBT. (See bacb.com for the current exam format, scheduling, and scoring.)
