The New RBT 12-PDU Renewal Requirement

The BACB replaced the annual competency assessment with a 12-PDU requirement. Here's exactly what changed, what counts, and how to meet your renewal deadline.

12 PDUs per 2-year cycle
3 approved PDU pathways
~300K active RBTs now affected
⚠️

Supervision hours no longer count. Under the 3rd Edition TCO, routine RBT supervision does not qualify as PDUs. Your 12 PDUs must come from one of the three approved pathways described below.

From Annual Assessment to 12 PDUs: The BACB's New Standard

On January 1, 2026, the BACB's 3rd Edition Task Content Outline (TCO) took effect. This update restructured the RBT certification entirely — including how you maintain it.

The old annual competency assessment (where your supervisor observed and signed off on your skills each year) is gone. In its place: a professional development requirement that holds RBTs to the same continuing education standard as other credentialed professionals.

✗ Retired (pre-2026)

Annual competency assessment conducted by your supervisor. Signed off once per year to maintain certification.

✓ Current (2026 onward)

12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) earned over each 2-year certification cycle through approved pathways.

The new requirement applies to all RBT certifications on cycles beginning on or after January 1, 2026. If your cycle began in 2026, your first PDU-based renewal falls approximately in 2028.

How to Earn Your 12 RBT PDUs

The BACB has defined exactly three pathways that qualify. All 12 PDUs must come from one or more of these:

1

ACE Provider Training Events

Training events offered by a BACB-Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Provider. This is the most accessible pathway — many are available online and self-paced.

2

In-Service Training

Structured training delivered by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D at your workplace. Must be formal, documented in-service training — not routine supervision.

3

University Coursework

Coursework completed at an accredited college or university in behavior analysis or a related field. Transcripts required for documentation.

PDU Disqualifiers: What to Avoid

Not every professional activity qualifies as a PDU. Here's what the BACB explicitly excludes under the 3rd Edition:

What the New Task Content Outline Covers

The 3rd Edition TCO is more than a renewal rule change — it also restructured the RBT exam itself. If you're working toward your RBT credential (or supporting someone who is), the exam content changed as of January 1, 2026.

The updated TCO covers 43 task items across 6 domains:

  1. Measurement
  2. Skill Acquisition
  3. Behavior Reduction
  4. Documentation and Reporting
  5. Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice
  6. Ethics

Training aligned to the 3rd Edition TCO is relevant both for initial RBT certification and for ACE-provider PDU credit during renewal.

RBT PDU Requirement: Common Questions

Starting January 1, 2026, RBTs must earn 12 Professional Development Units (PDUs) during every two-year certification cycle. This requirement replaced the previous annual competency assessment. PDUs must come from one of three approved pathways: ACE Provider events, in-service training supervised by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D, or university coursework.
The 12-PDU requirement applies to all RBT certification cycles starting on or after January 1, 2026. If your cycle began in 2026, your first PDU renewal date is approximately 2028. Log into your BACB certification portal to see your exact renewal date.
No. Under the new BACB 3rd Edition TCO, routine supervision sessions do not count toward the 12-PDU requirement. This is one of the most significant changes from the prior model. PDUs must come from ACE Provider training events, structured in-service training, or university coursework.
The 12 PDUs are required over a two-year cycle, not per calendar year. That averages to 6 PDUs per year, but you can earn them in any distribution across the two years. Many RBTs prefer to complete their PDUs early in the cycle to avoid deadline pressure.
PDU (Professional Development Unit) is the BACB's term for RBT renewal credits under the 3rd Edition. CEU (Continuing Education Unit) is used for BCBA and BCaBA renewal requirements. RBTs earn PDUs — not CEUs — though ACE Provider training events can generate both, depending on the credential held.
The BACB maintains a registry of Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Providers at the BACB website. Special Learning is ACE Provider OP-14-2437 and offers online, self-paced RBT training aligned to the 3rd Edition TCO. All Special Learning training events count toward RBT PDU requirements.
