PA IBHS new-hire training record

A planning sheet for the person coordinating a new BHT’s training.

Use one blank record per new hire to map the topics, training sources and records your agency will review. This sheet is a planning aid; it does not certify completion or determine whether a course is Department-approved.

Who this sheet addresses: Under § 5240.73(c)–(d), a person who has not previously provided BHT services has an initial training requirement before providing services independently and another within the first six months of providing BHT services. Confirm the applicable rule, approved training sources, substitutions and your agency’s plan with your OMHSAS licensing representative.

Complete it on paper and keep it with your agency’s training records. This page has no form submission.

1. Record the dates

Staff member or internal ID
Training lead
First day providing BHT services
Planned date of independent services

For this group of new BHTs, § 5240.73(c) specifies at least 30 hours before independent service. Section 5240.73(d) specifies at least 24 hours within the first six months of providing BHT services. These are distinct requirements. Record the actual start dates and verify the applicable deadlines.

2. Map the initial topics

For each topic, record the actual training, source and completion evidence. The list below is a short planning index; use the regulation for the full wording and ask the licensing representative about approval and fit.

Initial topic: § 5240.73(c)Course / providerCompletion date and evidenceHours to review
Child Protective Services Law and mandated reporting
Crisis intervention, risk management, de-escalation and safety planning
Behavior management skills and coaching
Child and adolescent development
Serious emotional disturbance and other behavioral and psychosocial needs
Professional ethics, conduct and confidentiality
First aid and CPR, universal precautions and safety
Psychotropic medications and common side effects

A course can address more than one topic; review actual hours and evidence rather than adding the same hours twice. Obtain required mandated-reporting, first-aid and CPR training through appropriate approved sources.

3. Plan the first six months

Use the full topic list in § 5240.73(d) when building the individual plan. It covers documentation; systems of care; functional behavioral assessment; cultural and linguistic considerations; family engagement and skills; community resources; cross-system collaboration; communication and conflict resolution; IEP and special education basics; and safe use of restrictive procedures.

Try an ABA foundations course with your team

For groups of ten or more, Level 1 ABA Online Training Course is $99 per learner, paid once. The product page describes a free seven-day trial of the first two sessions; confirm multi-person eligibility with Special Learning before planning a group review. It draws largely on work with young children in classrooms and homes. It does not meet state-mandated training, qualify anyone to practise ABA, or provide the 40-hour RBT training, RBT certification, or continuing-education credit. Session 1 presents information from 2012; since 2013, the DSM-5 has classified autism under one diagnosis, autism spectrum disorder.
