What changes for BCBA candidates on January 1, 2027

The board is replacing the 2022 requirements. Two of the four ways into the credential disappear. The coursework total stays exactly the same while everything underneath it moves. Three fieldwork rules change. One country loses the route altogether. This page puts the old rule and the new rule side by side and names the handbook line each one came from, so you can check us.

Do these three things this week.

1. Work out which pathway you’re on. If it’s 3 or 4, your route ends rather than narrows — section 2.
2. Ask for your transcript and your Final Fieldwork Verification Forms now. They come from other people. Complete means complete on the board’s desk, not sent from yours.
3. Tell your supervisor which rule set your fieldwork will close under. Two of the rules they sign off on change — section 4.

If you live outside the United States, read section 5 before any of this. If you live in Australia, applications close altogether on January 1, 2027, and that is the only part of this page you need.

1. The date, and what “complete” means

December 31, 2026 is not a deadline for deciding to apply. It’s the date by which the board must have your whole application in hand: the form, the payment, and every required document, which for most people means an official transcript and a signed Final Fieldwork Verification Form from each supervisor. Any one of those arriving in January puts the whole application under the 2027 rules.

If you’re relying on somebody else to send a piece of it — a registrar, a university program contact, a supervisor who has moved on — work backwards from that date rather than forwards from today. That’s the part of this we can tell you from our own lane: the documents that go missing are almost never the ones the candidate controls.

2. Four pathways become two

Today there are four ways to qualify for the BCBA exam. From January 1, 2027 there are two.

If you’re a university faculty member who was counting years of teaching and research toward Pathway 3, or a doctoral-level practitioner accruing postdoctoral hours under Pathway 4, this is the change that matters to you, and we couldn’t find it written down plainly anywhere. Your route doesn’t narrow on January 1, 2027. It ends. A complete application received by December 31, 2026 is the last one that will be reviewed against it.

3. The coursework total doesn’t change. The coursework does.

This is the part that will be reported wrong. Pathway 2 requires 315 instructional hours today and it requires 315 instructional hours in 2027. Read only the total and you would conclude nothing happened. Every content area underneath it has moved. Read the table below as two lists rather than as a row-by-row swap: one area splits into two courses, and two separate areas combine into one.

Three things follow from that table, and only one of them is obvious.

• Supervision and management goes from 30 hours to 45, and becomes Organizational Behavior Management in its own freestanding course. It’s the single largest increase in the set. If you’re mapping an existing transcript against the 2027 requirements, this is the gap you’re most likely to find.
• Research methods becomes a freestanding course. Under 2027 every one of the six areas carries a freestanding-course requirement — one course each, two for behavior assessment and intervention — and the content must make up the majority of that course. Coursework that covered a topic as a unit inside a broader class satisfies the hours on paper and not the requirement.
• The whole coursework sequence may not be completed in less than one calendar year — defined as three consecutive primary semesters, four consecutive primary quarters, or twelve consecutive months. So does the degree itself: a master’s earned in less than one calendar year doesn’t meet the 2027 Pathway 2 degree requirement. There is no accelerated route through this part any more.

4. Three fieldwork rules move, and one of them changes the arithmetic

The observation change is the one to read twice. Today a supervisor satisfies the requirement with one observation of you working with a client in the month, however long it runs. From 2027 it’s measured in minutes and it accumulates. That’s a different thing to schedule and a different thing to document, and it’s your supervisor’s signature on the form either way.

The cap change moves the floor on how fast anyone can finish. This is our arithmetic, not the board’s, and it’s a floor rather than a forecast:

2,000 hours ÷ 130 hours per month = 15.4 months, so 16 supervisory periods under the current cap.
2,000 hours ÷ 160 hours per month = 12.5 months, so 13 supervisory periods from 2027.

Nobody hits the maximum every month for more than a year while doing the rest of a job, so treat both numbers as the fastest the rules allow and not as a timeline to plan around. We publish them because the 130-hour cap is the reason honest answers to “how long does it take?” start above a year, and that floor is about to move.

5. If you’re outside the United States, this is the part that decides it

One change is not a change of requirements at all. It’s the end of the route. The BCBA Handbook’s jurisdiction table states that residents of Australia will no longer be able to apply for BACB certification as of January 1, 2027. Not a harder pathway, not a longer one — applications close.

The same entry carries the half that matters if you’re already certified: those holding BACB certifications in Australia will be able to maintain their certification. This closes the door to new applicants; it doesn’t take a credential away from anyone who has one.

Australia is not the only jurisdiction on that table. Ontario residents can no longer apply for RBT or BCaBA certification at all, and the BCBA and BCBA-D routes closed to them on June 30, 2026 — a date that has already gone. If you live outside the United States, read the jurisdiction table in the current handbook before you read anything else about requirements, including this page, because it decides whether the rest applies to you at all.

6. The BCaBA changes too

The board’s announcement names both credentials, and the BCaBA Handbook carries its own 2027 section: from January 1, 2027 BCaBA applicants apply through two pathways — an ABAI-accredited bachelor’s degree program, or a bachelor’s degree plus behavior-analytic coursework — with the same December 31, 2026 cutoff for review under the 2022 requirements. If you’re on the BCaBA route, read the 2027 section of your own handbook rather than this page’s BCBA tables; the structure is similar and the numbers are not the same.

7. What to do before December 31, 2026

1. Work out which pathway you’re actually on. If it’s 3 or 4, you’re on a clock that ends, and everything below is urgent rather than tidy.
2. Ask for the documents now. Transcripts and Final Fieldwork Verification Forms come from other people. Complete means complete on the board’s desk, not sent from yours.
3. If you’re on Pathway 2, map your transcript against the 2027 table above, not against the current one — because if your application slips into January you’ll be judged on the 2027 column. Look at supervision and management first: 30 hours becomes 45, in its own course.
4. Tell your supervisor which rule set your fieldwork will close under. The observation requirement and the concentrated-supervision percentage both change, and they sign the form.
5. Read the board’s transition guidance for your own record. It is the only document that can answer what carries over, and it is published by the body that decides.
6. Check the edition date on anything you read about this, including this page. The handbooks are reissued quarterly. A page written against the 01/2026 edition can be confidently wrong.
